Sir Winston Churchill – Ṣoḍaśottarī Application

Sir Winston Churchill – Ṣoḍaśottarī Application
Winston Churchill chart

This is the chart of the famous Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Winston Churchill. Kanyā (Virgo) with Maṅgala (Mars) rises on the Lagna. The first thing we see is that the rulers of the tenth house and the Lagna are in the second Bhāva, creating Rāja Siṁhāsana Yoga. In the text Bṛhat Pārāśara Horā Śāstra we find the following verse:

स्वांशे वा पञ्चमे शुक्रे जीवेन्दुयुतवीक्षिते। लग्ने लग्नपदे वाऽपि राजवर्गो भवेन्नरः॥ ११॥

svāṁśe vā pañcame śukre jīvenduyutavīkṣite | lagne lagnapade vā’pi rājavargo bhavennaraḥ || 11 ||

A person will be connected with royal circles if Venus is on the Kārakāṁśa, or in the fifth from it, or on the Lagna or on the Ārūḍha Lagna, and is either aspected by or conjoined with Jupiter or the Moon.

Here we see that Venus is on the Kārakāṁśa Lagna, in Parivartana (mutual exchange) with Jupiter, and receiving the Rāśi Dṛṣṭi of the Moon.

There is also a Khala Parivartana connected with the Ārūḍha Lagna. Mantreśvara, in his work Phaladīpikā, in the sixth chapter titled Yogādhyāya, gives the following effects of this yoga:

… उद्वृत्तश्च खले कदाचिदख्लं भाग्यं लभेताखिलं सौम्योक्त्तिश्च कदाचिदेवमशुभं दारिद्रयदुःखादिकम्॥ ३३॥

… udvṛttaśca khale kadācidakhlaṁ bhāgyaṁ labhetākhilaṁ saumyokttiśca kadācidevamaśubhaṁ dāridrayaduḥkhādikam (second part of the 33rd śloka)

A person born with Khala Yoga in the natal chart can be arrogant, yet at times very gentle and kind. Life is marked by both rises and falls. At certain times the person will experience abundant fortune, while at other times there may be misery, poverty, and suffering. Later we will see how these changes occurred in the life of Mr. Churchill.

Ṣoḍaśottarī Daśā is applicable in this chart because Winston Churchill was born on Kṛṣṇa Saptamī (during the Kṛṣṇa Pakṣa) with the Lagna in the Hora of the Moon. Rāhu is the Kāraka for this Daśā, and in this chart Rāhu is the Amātyakāraka among the Carakārakas, indicating the great importance of profession and career in life. Rāhu plays a very important role, because it is the ruler of the sixth house placed in the eighth, creating a powerful Viparīta Rāja Yoga. At the same time it is placed sixth from the Ārūḍha Lagna, indicating a person who will definitely confront and oppose enemies.

Childhood

The fourth house from the Moon indicates the mother of the person. Here, the ruler of the twelfth house, Sūrya (the Sun), is together with Śukra (Venus). Venus is in Parivartana (mutual exchange) with Ketu. His mother was of American origin and the daughter of the American millionaire Leonard Jerome (Ātmakāraka Venus is placed in the fourth house from the Moon).

Venus is placed on the Navāṁśa Lagna as the ruler of the eighth house, again in Parivartana, this time with Jupiter. This indicates a premature birth. Winston Churchill was indeed born prematurely.

The Ātmakāraka is on the Navāṁśa Lagna, which indicates that the person will be born into a royal or noble family, which is also true in this case. Sir Winston Churchill was a descendant of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough.

In the Rāśi chart, we see that Ketu is in the second house, aspected by Śani (Saturn) from the fifth house. Ketu is a mortal enemy to Rajasic Grahas, and here Ketu is together with Budha (Mercury), the Kāraka for speech. According to Maharishi Jaimini, with this combination a person will have speech difficulties, which was indeed the case here.

He had many problems with basic education and changed three different schools during that period. Parāśara gives an explanation for this in chapter 24 of Bṛhat Pārāśara Horā Śāstra:

लग्नगे सहजाधीशे स्वभुजार्जितवित्तवान्‌। सेवाज्ञः साहसी जातो विद्याहीनोऽपि बुद्धिमान्‌॥ २५॥

lagnage sahajādhīśe svabhujārjitavittavān | sevājñaḥ sāhasī jāto vidyāhīno’pi buddhimān || 25 ||

If the ruler of the third house is in the first house, the person will acquire wealth through their own efforts, will be inclined toward service or devotion, will be courageous and intelligent, although separated from formal education.
(BPHS – Bhāveśa-phalādhyāya, chapter 24, verse 25)

Churchill detail

Here the ruler of the third house, Maṅgala (Mars), is on the Lagna in an enemy Rāśi, which gives a rebellious nature. Winston Churchill graduated from the Royal Military College Sandhurst and was connected with the cavalry.

He needed three attempts to pass the entrance examination, due to the retrogression of the ruler of the ninth house. The cavalry was a natural choice because of the Parivartana between the ruler of the ninth house and Ketu (horses – Aśvinī).

There was also distance in the relationship with his father, because the Dvādaśāṁśa Devatā of the ruler of the ninth house is Ahi (Serpent), indicating a very independent person—someone who does not easily obey others. His father wanted to transfer him to an infantry regiment, but he remained in the cavalry.

Marriage

Churchill marriage chart

During Ketu Mahādaśā – Budha Antaradaśā, he met his future wife. Budha is together with the ruler of the seventh house, Guru (Jupiter), who is the Dārakāraka in the chart, and it aspects the Ārūḍha of the seventh house (Dārapada).

They were married in Ketu/Ketu/Śukra Daśā. Ketu is placed in the twelfth house from Sūrya, which is considered very favorable. Ketu is the ruler of the Upapada and the dispositor of Venus. At the same time, Venus is the ruler of the seventh house from Upapada, which is responsible for bringing the partner into one’s life.

Profession

Sir Winston Churchill worked as a correspondent for several British newspapers, which is shown by Budha in the third house from both the Navāṁśa Lagna and the Kārakāṁśa Lagna.

Sūrya in a trine from Svāṁśa gives good service to the government and society. The Amātyakāraka Rāhu is in Vargottama Navāṁśa, in Mars’s sign Meṣa (Aries), indicating a profession connected with the military.

His Janma Nakṣatra is Maghā, ruled by Ketu. This is naturally the tenth Nakṣatra, whose symbol is a throne. This Nakṣatra indicates people who strive for power and wealth. The tenth Nakṣatra from it is Mūla, also ruled by Ketu, which is simultaneously the ruler of the Ārūḍha Lagna.

During Ketu Mahādaśā – Śani Antaradaśā, he traveled to Cuba to write about the Spanish battles with the Cuban guerrillas. Ketu is the ruler of the Ārūḍha Lagna, placed in the twelfth from it, in Parivartana with the Graha on the Ārūḍha Lagna, indicating the rise of the Ārūḍha Lagna. Ketu rules the fifth house in the Daśāṁśa, indicating a new profession.

Śani (Saturn) is in the third from the Ārūḍha Lagna, indicating Parākrama (courage). It is also in the sixth house from the Moon, indicating the battlefield. During this period, he first found himself on the front lines of combat. The third house from the Ārūḍha Lagna also indicates danger to life.

During Ketu–Guru Daśā, he was involved in battles in India. Guru is in Maraṇa Kāraka Sthāna from the Moon in the Rāśi chart and is the ruler of the Ārūḍha of the sixth house (Śatrupada). In this period, he encountered defeat for the first time in his life.

A relevant verse from Bṛhat Pārāśara Horā Śāstra states:

राज्यनाथे जनुर्लग्नादमात्येशयुतेक्षिते। अमात्यकारकेणापि प्रधानत्वं नृपालये॥ १॥

rājyanāthe janurlagnādamātyeśayutekṣite | amātyakārakeṇāpi pradhānatvaṁ nṛpālaye || 1 ||

Translation: If the ruler of the tenth house (from the Lagna) is conjoined with or aspected by the Amātyakāraka or its dispositor, the person becomes first after the king (or the head of government).

In this chart, the ruler of the tenth house, Budha (Mercury), is aspected by Rāhu, the Amātyakāraka. We have already seen that Budha is also involved in Siṁhāsana Yoga. Budha and Rāhu (together with Sūrya) belong to the upper class of Grahas, indicating people who strive for power and authority.

Daśāṁśa D10 chart

The first thing we see in the Daśāṁśa (D10) is that the ruler of the Lagna from the Rāśi chart is directed toward the Brahma direction (downward), which indicates that money will play a very important role in the profession. Winston Churchill initially began his career as a war correspondent, because he was very dissatisfied with the salary he received as a Hussar lieutenant in the British Army.

Budha (Mercury), the ruler of the tenth house from the Lagna, is in high dignity in the Daśāṁśa and rules the third house, which indicates writing, especially writing connected with foreign countries.

Sūrya (the Sun) is in the sixth house, aspected by Rāhu, indicating politics as the main profession.

In 1908, Churchill first attempted to enter politics during Ketu/Maṅgala/Ketu Daśā. Maṅgala (Mars) is exalted in the Daśāṁśa, but placed in Maraṇa Kāraka Sthāna, therefore the Pratyantara Daśā was not favorable for elections.

In 1900, he entered the British Parliament. This occurred during Ketu–Sūrya Daśā–Antara. Ketu is the ruler of the fifth house in the Daśāṁśa and is together with the ruler of the Lagna (Chandra – bureaucracy). We have already noted the importance of the Sun regarding politics.

The Sun is in the Artha Trikoṇa in the Daśāṁśa, which indicates that the political career will be very significant. The Sun is also on the Ārūḍha Lagna in the Rāśi chart, and applying the rule that Antara Daśā affects the Ārūḍha in trines, it clearly shows that the Sun’s Antara Daśā would bring major changes.

In 1900, Churchill joined the Conservative Party in order to enter Parliament and remained there for four years. In 1904, he changed sides and joined the Liberal Party.

This occurred during Budha Antara Daśā, when he spent most of his time campaigning for free trade, which is associated with Mercury. This Antara Daśā was also largely devoted to writing, and during this period he completed the biography of his father, Lord Randolph Churchill.

As soon as Chandra Antara Daśā began, he became Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies. Chandra (the Moon) in the Rāśi chart is the ruler of the ninth house from the Ārūḍha Lagna (support), placed in the tenth from the Ārūḍha Lagna (career) and in the twelfth from the Lagna (foreign lands).

In 1915, he was responsible for the Gallipoli landing at the Dardanelles, which ended as a major failure. This occurred during Chandra Mahādaśā – Maṅgala Antaradaśā.

Maṅgala is exalted in the Daśāṁśa, indicating strong professional ambitions, especially connected with the military, but it is in Maraṇa Kāraka Sthāna, so he again had to face defeat in life. After this event he continued to work in military-related roles but withdrew from the government.

In 1917, during Chandra–Sūrya Daśā, Churchill was appointed Minister of Munitions. The Sun again activates the Ārūḍha Lagna and the Ārūḍha of the sixth house, indicating service and work for others. The Sun is in the Artha Trikoṇa in the Daśāṁśa, in a fire sign.

Venus is together with Rāhu (the Amātyakāraka) in the tenth house, after which Churchill was promoted again, becoming Secretary of State for War and Secretary of State for Air.

In 1924, he returned again to the Conservative Party. Saturn in the third house from the Ārūḍha Lagna, in its own sign, indicates a conservative orientation. This occurred during Chandra Daśā / Antara, and Chandra in the Daśāṁśa is together with the rulers of the ninth and fifth houses and has Digbala (directional strength) relative to the Lagna in the Daśāṁśa.

During Budha/Ketu Daśā–Antara, the Conservative government was defeated. After this event, Churchill was no longer invited into government. In Ketu Antara, Ketu is in the third house from the Moon, which is a good placement for a malefic Graha, but it is in Parivartana with Venus. After this period, he withdrew from public life for some time.

II World War

WWII

During the Budha–Śukra period, Britain declared war on Germany and Winston Churchill returned as First Lord of the Admiralty (head of the British Admiralty). In this period he made several very good decisions due to the Budha–Sūrya influence (Nipuṇa Yoga) based on Parivartana (mutual exchange).

During Budha Daśā / Antara, the Rāja Yoga began to dominate. Sir Winston Churchill became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on 10 May 1940. For the next two years he balanced relations and offered support to both the Soviet Union and the United States.

During Śukra–Chandra Daśā, after the war, he lost the elections. Venus (Śukra) is the Ātmakāraka, together with Sūrya. Rāhu is the Amātyakāraka in Maraṇa Kāraka Sthāna from the Ātmakāraka, which creates a Bhanga Yoga (cancellation or reversal effect).

During Śukra–Śani Daśā in 1951, he again became Prime Minister and regained power. Śani (Saturn) is in the third house from the Ārūḍha Lagna and in the sixth from the Moon. Malefics in Duṣthānas can produce Rāja Yoga, bringing rise after difficulty.

During Śukra–Guru, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature. This occurred in 1953, historically documented for Churchill’s historical and literary works. Guru (Jupiter) is the ruler of the second house from the Ārūḍha Lagna, promising fame and recognition.

What is important to observe is that Rāhu, although the Amātyakāraka, is placed in the eighth house and casts Dṛṣṭi on the Ārūḍha Lagna and the second house from it. This indicates that the Ārūḍha Lagna can be affected or damaged due to Mars-related circumstances. This proved accurate historically, as Churchill experienced several defeats due to controversial or unsuccessful military decisions during battles.
